Weathering and Mass Movement Flashcards
Weathering
Break up and decay of exposed rock on the earths surface
Physical / Mechanical Weathering
The disintegration of rocks without any chemical changes occurring
ie Freeze Thaw Weathering
Chemical Weathering
The decomposition of rocks due to chemical reactions
ie Acidic rain and limestone
Biological Weathering
Involves actions of flora, fauna, or animals
ie Plant roots are effective at growing into and expanding cracks in the rock
Mass Movement
The downhill movement of material under the influence of gravity
Rock Fall
Fragments of rock break away from the cliff face, often due to freeze thaw weathering
Landslide
Blocks of rock slide downhill
Mudflow
Saturated soil and weak rock flows downhill
Rotational Slip
A weakened slump of saturated rock and soil along a curved surface
