Erosion, Transportation and Deposition Flashcards
What are the 4 processes of erosion?
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Attrition
Solution
What is hydraulic action?
The force of the water breaking rock particles away from the river channel
What is abrasion?
Rocks in the river channel hit and rub against the sides of the river channel, wearing it away
What is attrition?
Rocks in the river channel hit eachother and break into smaller fragments, making them rounder
What is solution?
The river water dissolves certain types of rock- chalk and limestone
What are the 4 transportation processes?
Traction
Suspension
Saltation
Solution
What is traction?
Larger rocks (like boulders) are rolled and pushed along the river bed by the rock of the water
What is suspension?
Small particles like silt and clay are carried along by the water
What is saltation?
Pebble sized are bounced along the river bed by the force of the water
What is solution (transportation)?
Soluble materials dissolve in the water and are carried along
When does deposition occur?
When a river slows down
What 3 things cause a river to slow down?
The river is shallower- inner meander bend
The volume of water in the river decreases- more friction
The amount of eroded material in the river increases
