Weather vs. Cimate Flashcards
What is weather?
-The day to day temperature and atmospheric conditions
What is climate?
-The long term weather and atmospheric conditions of a region
What are the influences of Weather & Climate?
- Latitude
- Distribution of Land
- Ocean Currents
- Elevation
How does Latitude affect weather?
- Angles of the Sun
- Day Length
How does Ocean currents affect weather?
-The pacific ocean has cold water current
Hows does land distribution of Land and Water?
-Land heats and cools 5x faster
How does elevation influence weather?
-For every 1000 feet it cools 3.5 deegres
How are winds named?
-The winds are named by the direction they come from
What are the trends of winds?
- As wind goes up it cools
- As wind descends temperature raises due to compressing winds
What is a high pressure cell?
- region where the atmospheric pressure is greater than the surrounding area.
- Winds with high pressure flow outward to areas of lower pressure
- Known as stable, clean, and fair weather
- Causes barometer to increase
- Rotates clockwise in N. Hem.
What is a low pressure cell?
- Region which the atmospheric is lower than the surrounding area
- Inward
- The raising air causes a falling barometer and unstable weather.
- Causes a barometer to lower
What is a cyclone?
-A lower pressure system
What are levels of the Pressure Belt in Northern and Southern Hem?
- Equatorial L.P. Belt
- North Hem:
- ->Subtropical H.P. Blet
- ->Subpolar L.P. Belt
- ->Polar H.P. Belt
- South Hem:
- ->Subtropical H.P. Belt
- ->Polar H.P. Belt
- ->Subpolar L.P. Belt
What is the direction of the of the pressure belt in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere?
- L.P. system move Counter-Clockwise
- H.P. system move Clockwise-
- In the South the direction is opposite for H.P. and L.P. systems.
What direction does air pressure flow?
-High to Low
