What is the Atlantic Periphery?
- Boundary that includes Canadian provinces and US Eastern states
- Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.
- Main, Vermont, New Hampshire, and northeastern NY
How were harbors in the Atlantic Periphery created?
-Are submerged river valleys modified by ice sheet/ glaciers
What is the Climate of the A.P.?
- Cool mild summers
- Cold snowy winters
Why doesn’t the Atlantic Ocean have a greater effect on regulating the A.P. climate?
- The winds in North blow W to E.
- The Atlantic Ocean only influences coastal temp.
What are the two currents off the Coast of the Atlantic Ocean?
- Labrador (Cold)
- Gulf Stream current (Warm)1
What is the Grand Banks?
- The mixing of the Labrador and Gulf Stream current creates a nutrient rich ocean floor
- Creates hot spot for fishing
What is a core area?
- Economics strength
- leadership and influence over other economies
What is a peripheral area?
- Economically weaker
- Dependent on core areas politically and economically
- Lack of agriculture (rocky soil), relative isolation, urbanization, and natural resources
What crops does the peripheral area grow?
- speciality crops
- ->blueberries, cranberries, & maple syrup in American A.P.
What resources are available for the A.P.?
- Large forests
- Fish (Codfish, Lobsters)
What effect has Megalopolis had on A.P.?
- The population of Megalopolis had spilled over to A.P.
