Themes of Geography Flashcards
What are the five themes of geography?
- Space
- Place
- Region
- Movement
- Human Environment and Relationship
What is Latitude?
- Lines across the earth that are parallel
- Measured North and South from the equator
- Influences weather and climate
What is Longitude?
- Lines stretching from north to south pole
- Measured in East and West
- Affects time zones.
What is the great circle?
- Cuts through the center of the earth.
- Used for navigation to shorten distances.
What is the prime meridian? Why is it important?
- The line of longitude where its to be defined as zero.
- ->Arbitrary
- Divides the globe into East and West
- Used for time zones.
What is the international Date line?
- Lines of Longitude
- Cross the line from east to west and a day is added.
- Cross the line from west to east and a day is subtracted
- ->Travels who going east when crossing the IDL subtract 24 hours so that the calendar
What is Axial Tilt?
-Is the angle between the an objects rotational axis and the line perpendicular to its orbital plane.
What is Axial parallelism?
-The position of the axis at any one time is always parallel to the position it occupied the previous time.
What is the circle of Illumination?
-The lines that separate the Earth to create equal parts of day and night
What is the Plane of Ecliptic?
- The plane of the Earths orbit around the sun
- Earth spin axis is titled 23.5 degrees w.r.t. the the spin axis.
What is Rotate?
-The spin of an object on its axis
What is Revolve?
-Move in a orbit around an object.
What is significance of the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn?
-The suns most intense rays do not go beyond 23.5 N&S degrees.
What influences the earths weather and climate?
-Revolve
How does the Axial Tilt influence seasons?
- One pole or hemisphere will be directed away from the sun at one side of the orbit
- Half and orbit later will be directed towards the sun
