Weather systems Flashcards
What is an Air mass ?
A large body of air that is uniform in temperature , atmospheric pressure and humidity
What is a Front ?
It’s the boundary between air masses
What’s a cold front ?
- It’s cold air rising
- It forms when warm air has to rise quickly over a large cold air mass
- The warm air cools and condenses , forming heavy clouds of rain
What is a warm front ?
- It’s a warm air mass that is moving
- It forms when warm air moves slowly over cold air.
- It could and condenses to create dark clouds and continuous rainfall
How do we call areas of high pressure ?
Anticyclones
What are called areas of low pressure?
Cyclones or depressions
What is the weather at low pressure ?
Wind blows, air rises and produces clouds and condensation, frequent storms , it’s cold
What is the weather at high pressure?
Dry, warm , sunny, cloud free, light winds
What are the 3 types of rain ?
- Relief rain
- Frontal rain
- Convenctional rain
Describe conventional rainfall
- Heated ground heats the shallow layer of air
- The moisture on the ground evaporates
- Warm, moist pockets of air rise quickly
- Rising air cools and condenses and forms clouds
Describe relief rainfall
- Wet warm air is forced over mountains
- It cools down and condenses and it forms clouds
- After the rainfall the drier air descends on the other side of the mountain
How do we call high clouds?
Cirrus ( transparent and ice crystals )
How do we call middle level clouds ?
Stratus ( layered )
How do we call low level clouds ?
Cumulus ( fluffy)
