HIC Case study Dublin Flashcards
1
Q
Give some pull factors of Dublin
A
- Centre of government
- Main source of employment
- Centre of financial services
- Major centre of education
2
Q
What are the results of rural-urban migration ?
A
- Urban sprawl: growth at the edge of the city, expansion on edges and other towns at greater distance away, greater demand on houses, car ownership increased
- Traffic congestion : higher employment levels mean commuters to and from Dublin, high house prices means people will travel from around the city, there is a under developed public transport but better roads so it encourages people to drive
- Services under pressure in dormitory towns close to Dublin : increased pressure from rapidly expanding commuter population, investment is required in education, healthcare etc, finding landfills is difficult
3
Q
What are the effects on the rural area ?
A
- Rural depopulation: ageing population, low marriage and birth rates , imbalance in female male ratio ( boys more likely to remain to farm)
- Reduction in services : smaller population can’t maintain services , lack of choices leads to resentment and bitterness
4
Q
Give some solutions
A
- New towns on the edge of Dublin: housing the overspill population ( Adamstown ) , services are being put into place ( retail, commercial , leisure )
- National Spatial Strategy ( NSS) : trying to balance development across Ireland to control growth in Dublin , aims to allow people to live and work locally, investing in towns with gateway and hub status , reduce need for housing in Dublin
- Investment in transport infrastructure : Transport 21 a plan to improve transport links to rural areas to encourage economic development , reduce rural population and provide more balance economic development
- Use existing land in Dubin carefully: all vacant land in the city will be identified to allow redevelopment for housing
