Climate Flashcards
1
Q
What are the factors that influence climate ?
A
- Latitude
- Distance from the sea/ocean
- Prevailing winds an air masses
2
Q
Explain why Latitude ?
A
The further north and south of the equator an area is the colder it will be
3
Q
Explain the distance form the sea
A
- Water I the sea absorbs really slowly during the summer. And it also loses the heat really slowly.
- Areas of land close to the sea will be cooled down by the water in summer and warmed up by the water I the winter
- There’s a small temperature range
4
Q
Explain why the prevailing winds
A
- Winds and air masses can make an area colder, warmer, wetter or drier
- Their influence will depend from their direction, where they come from and whether they pass over land or water
5
Q
What is the North Atlantic drift ?
A
- It’s a warm current that comes from the Gulf of Mexico
- It brings wet weather but rising temperatures
3.
6
Q
What are the factors that influence local climate ?
A
The shape of the land ( aspect and altitude )
7
Q
What is aspect ?
A
It’s the direction in which a slope is facing.
8
Q
Why are the slopes in the northern hemisphere warmer ?
A
- The sun shines directly on these slopes
- The warm southerly winds blow against the slopes, so they are protected from the cold winds
9
Q
Why does altitude influence local climate ?
A
- The air is thinner and it can hold less heat
- It’s also colder
