Weather Flashcards
1
Q
What is the definition of weather ?
A
Refers to the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and space
2
Q
Describe the Troposphere
A
- The lowest layer on the Earth’s surface
- Most of the mass of the atmosphere ( 75 %)
- Most of the clouds
- Wettest layer
3
Q
What places receive a lot of sunshine ?
A
Places of low latitude
4
Q
What places receive little sunshine?
A
Places of high latitude
5
Q
What is atmospheric pressure ?
A
It’s the weight of the air pressing down on the earth
6
Q
How does air move ?
A
Air moves from areas of high pressure to low pressure to form wind
7
Q
Describe the Hadley cell
A
- It occurs between the equator and 30 degrees north and south
- Air is heated near the equator and then it rises up and expand north and south
- By 30 degrees it has cooled down and starts to sink back
- The vacuum at the equator sucks in air form surroundings areas creating strong winds
8
Q
Describe the Polar cell
A
- Air by the pols is very cold so it’s pushed down and creates high pressure
- Slowly moves and when it reaches 60 degrees it heats up
- Starts to rise up and expand drifting north and south
- Cools downs again near the poles
9
Q
Describe the Ferel cell
A
- Air is descending at 30 degrees and it warms up as it’s nearer the earth’s surface
- Spreads north and south and at 60 degrees it meets the polar air
- It’s forced upwards and then spreads put north and south completing the cell
