Weather Patterns Flashcards
Convection Current
When gases or liquids fall and rise in a circular path.
Sea Breeze
This breeze happens during daytime. It happens when the cold air from the sea blows towards the land to take the place of the warm air that was there.
Land Breeze
This type of breeze happens during the nighttime. It happens when the cold air from above the land moves towards the sea to take the place of the warm air that was above there.
The Coriolis Effect
The Effect that explains how objects astray in the Northern Hemisphere deflect to the right while objects in the Southern Hemisphere deflect to the left.
Jet Stream
The Jet Stream is a band of winds that is very high, at about 10 kilometers in the sky, and is caused by differences in temperature. It moves from West to East in the Northern Hemisphere and from East to West in the Southern Hemisphere.
Trade Winds
Trade Winds are winds found at 30 degrees latitude, either north or south, and blow towards the equator.
Doldrums
Doldrums are a region near the equator where the winds lie still, they rise, but they do not blow.
Prevailing Winds
Prevailing Winds are winds that blow away from the equator, and they bring warm air.
Prevailing Westerlies
Prevailing Westerlies are winds that blow away from the equator. They blow from west to east and they are found over the United States. One example of this is the Gulf Stream, which is found on the East coast of the U.S and transports warm water.
Polar Easterlies
Polar Easterlies are winds that are found near the poles, and they move from east to west.
El Niño
A band of warm ocean temperatures that develop off of the coast of South America. It can cause droughts and warm up the climate.
La Niña
A band of cold ocean temperatures that develop off of the coast of South America. It causes more precipitation and cools down the climate.
Gulf Stream
The Gulf Stream is on the East coast of the United States and transports warm water.
