The Water Cycle Flashcards
Water Cycle
The cycle of water throughout the Earth, and the processes that water is put through, for example, evaporation and condensation.
Evaporation
When liquid water turns into water vapor, from a liquid to a gas.
Condensation
When water vapor becomes liquid water in the form of clouds or dew.
Precipitation
When water comes down as a solid or a liquid, in the form of rain, sleet, snow, or hail.
Sublimation
When Ice changes to water without first melting, such as when you put ice cubes in the freezer and they shrink.
Runoff
When water moves downhill, such as rain moving down a mountain.
Water Vapor
Water in the form of a gas. Water Vapor is always surrounding us.
Transpiration
Transpiration is the process of water, traveling through the plant, moving to the leaves, and then evaporating as water vapor into the atmosphere.
Fog
Fog is a cloud based at ground level., it forms when air near the ground cools, the more water droplets that condense, the thicker the cloud.
Cumulus
Cumulus clouds are based at mid-altitude, they look like a small white, puffy cotton ball, and they bring fair weather.
Stratus
Stratus clouds are low-altitude clouds. They look like a gray blanket covering the sky, and they bring light rain/drizzles.
Cirrus
Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy, and white. They are high-altitude clouds, they bring fair weather and they look like a feather.
Vertical Clouds/Thunder Heads/Cumulonimbus
Vertical Clouds are found literally at all altitudes, ranging from 1000-12000 meters. They can be very dark in color and they bring thunderstorms.
