Weather Conditions At An Anticylone Flashcards
Winter anticyclone weather (5)
- cold day temperatures
- cold night temperatures
- clear skies by day and night
- may have radiation fogs
- high atmospheric pollution (pollutants trapped by a temperature inversion)
Summer anticyclone weather (8)
- hot day temperatures
- warm night temperatures
- clear skies
- hazy sunshine
- morning mists
- heavy dew
- east cost have sea frets and haars
- thunderstorms if high humidity
What are blocking anticyclones
Anticyclones that establish themselves over Britain and northwest Europe and remain stationary for many days
What happens from blocking anticyclones
Depressions that would normally travel across the British isles on a westerly airstream are steered around the upper edge of the high, away from the area (extreme weather conditions are then produced)
What is fog
Conditions of tiny water droplets suspended in the atmosphere
What are the two main types of fog
Radiation fog and advection fog
When does radiation fog form
Under clear night skies when a moist atmosphere cools through the radiation of heat from the ground surface
How does radiation fog form
The cooling extends some distance above the ground surface and is encouraged by light winds that allow slight mixing of the air - it is cooled to dew point and condensation occurs
When is radiation fog common
- in winter as maximum cooling is allowed
- temperature inversions (in valleys)
Why does radiation fog occur under temperature inversions
Clear skies and high humidity- the air in the upper slopes chills more quickly than that in the valley bottom. Cooling increases the density of the air, and it begins to downslope. The cooler air at the bottom pushes the warmer air upwards. The cold air now at the bottom will cool to its dew point, and create a dense fog that can last all day, and cause a severe frost.
When does advection fog form
When a mass of relatively warm air moves horizontally across a cooler surface
How is advection fog formed
Air is cooled to its dew point and condensation occurs.
Where is advection fog most common
Around coasts and over the sea in summer. In some areas it is sometimes called a fret or haar
What happens as the fog moves inland
It is earned and evaporates
