Anticylones Flashcards
What are anticyclones
Areas of relatively high atmospheric pressure
How are anticyclones represented on a weather map
A system of closed isobars with pressures increasing towards the centre
How do anticyclones move
Slowly and may remain stationary over an area for several days or even weeks
What happens to the air in an anticyclones
It subsides (falls from above), warming as it falls = produced a decrease in its relative humidity which leads to a lack of cloud development, and dry conditions
What are the isobars like with an anticyclone
Usually far apart, and therefore there is little pressure difference between the centre and edges of the anticyclones
Winds in an anticyclone
Weak, and flow gently outwards in a clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere, anti-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere
