What are the colors of 5” projectiles?
Blue: training/inert
Olive drab with yellow band: high explosive
Brown with white band: illumination
Walk through how a 5” round makes its way from deep mag to being fired
1) Round is loaded at the lower loading station
2) Round is brought up via the lower hoist to the upper loading station from intermediate levels
3) Round is inserted into the drum at the upper loading station
4) Round indexes counter-clockwise twice to the transfer station
5) Fuse setter comes down and sets fuse
6) Round is pushed into the upper hoist
7) Upper hoist raises round into cradle/rammer holds round in cradle
8) Upper hoist lowers
9) Cradle swings up into ramming position
10) Rammer drives round into the breech
11) Rammer retracts
12) Breech block closes halfway to prevent round from falling out of breech

What are the two safeties of the 5”?
Intrusion barrier: keeps personnel out of the upper gun and when opened, prevents the upper gun from lighting off
Safety link: keeps gun in/out of battery depending on the current weapon posture
What are the four primary missions of the Mk 20 EOSS?
Target Acquisition, Spotting, Battle Damage Assessment, Laser Guided HSMST
What is the secondary mission of EOSS?
Man Overboard
What about the 5” round is different than all other rounds onboard?
