Weak international system
Allowed Hitler to gain power during 1930s ; absence of US due to isolationist policy ; deliberately didn’t get involved
Absence of USSR - consolidating dictatorship STALIN so out of European affairs
League of nations was weak and ineffective ; no military body to enforce its decisions
Britain refused to cooperate with communism
Weakness of League of Nations
Seen as weak as the Treaty or Versailles wasn’t enforced either
The idea of universal consent rather than majority rule - very bureaucratic
Wall Street Crash of 1929 ; led to growing disinterest in the League
No military strength ; Japan and Italy
Failure to intervene with Manchuria n impotence to resolve conflicts - just exit the league - Italy left too and left with France and Britain
Reasons for appeasement
Pacifism after destruction of WW1 ; furthered by the impact of the Great Depression
Many thought Versailles had been too punitive and Hitler should be allowed to overturn Versailles
Britain and France has not re-armed and they needed more time to prepare for a war
Examples of policy of appeasement
Britain followed appeasement when Hitler remilitarised the Rhineland saying that “Germany was only marching into its own back yard”
Anschluss - Britain and France did not stop Germany after annexing Austria ; direct violation of TOV
Munich Agreement - after Sudetenland invasion in 1938 he met with Chamberlain ; he promised he wouldn’t invade Czechoslovakia but he went back on his word
Impact of appeasement
Chamberlain was weak ; Britain and France gave Hitler the confidence to pursue a more bellicose foreign policy NEGATIVE
Allowed Britain and France to rearm and after Munich agreement they got radar etc - POSITIVE
