Q

Weimar Education

A

Socialists were fairer and more inclusive relative to pre-WW1 (confessional segmented and accentuated status quo - exclusive schools which required fees to prepare upper class students to university - socially stratified)
Socialist VISION of mixed public school system - constitution followed up with articles banning clerical inspection and declaring religious studies a subject students/parents can opt out of (no longer confessional)
However - these were heavily contested in Reichstag leading to compromise (especially with Centre Party who fought for religion in curriculum) - ended up with Länder producing education based on local parents needs
While waiting for federal governance law on guidelines for Länder (unable to agree 1921 and 1925) - introduced secular and simultaneous schools ; then in 1927 put all 3 on equal footing as long as parents of 40 children requested it
A lot of opposition - Vokskirche Evangelical organisation developed mass membership + idea that religion should be left to religious bodies and not schools
BUT - pedagogical reforms were introduced with abolition of elite preparatory schools (45% of universities parents were civil servants) and establishing compulsory 4 year Grundschule (encompassing lower classes)
Failure to completely reform education because of regional autonomy of Länder - SPD were unable to push out their policies due to disagreement in rural southern states for example… always a compromise
