Waves (feat. Chris Brown Flashcards
What are mechanical waves?
waves that is an oscillation of matter - transfers energy through a medium
What are electromagnetic waves?
oscilatting electric and magnetic field that progess throguh space without the need for a substance
How are EM waves produced?
a vibrating electric field generate a vibrating magnetic field, which generates a vibrating electric field further away etcetera
What are longitudinal waves?
waves in which the direction of vibration of the particle is parallel to the direction in which the waves travels
e.g. sound and seismic
rarefaction and compression occurs
What are transverse waves?
waves in the direction of vibration of vibration is perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels,
What is the difference between plane-polarised and unpolarised?
transverse waves are plane polarised if the vibrations stay in one plane only.
IF the vibrations change from one plane to another, the waves are unpolarised
longitudinal waves cannot be polarised
What is the plane of polarisation of an electromagnetic wave defined as?
the plane in which the electric field oscillates
