Q

What are wavefronts?

A

lines of constant phase, e.g. crests

the direction in whick a wave travels is at right angles to the wave fronts

Q

What is refraction?

A

when waves pass across a boundary at which the wave speed changes the wavelenght also changes

if the wavefronts approach at an angle to the boundary they change direction as well as speed

Q

How does diffraction occur?

A

waves spread out after passing through a gap or around an obstacle

the narrower the gap, the more the waves spread out

longer the wavelength the more the waves spread out
