diffraction Flashcards
1
Q
What happens as light is directed through a single slit?
A
bright central fringe with further fringes either side
central fringe is twice as wide
peak intensity decreases from the centre
each of the outer fringest is the same width
the outer fringes are much less intense
2
Q
how does fringe seperation change with varying wavelength?
A
increases as wave length increase
3
Q
What is the equation for the width of the central fringe?
A
(λ of light / width of single slit (a)) x 2D
2λD / a
4
Q
How do you ensure that the two slits overlap?
A
each slit must be narrow enough to make the light passing through it diffract sufficiently
the two slits must be close enough so the diffracted waves overlap on the screen
