waves Flashcards
What state of matter does sound travel fastest through.
Solids - densely packed particles
What state of matter does sound travel slowest through?
Gas - very spread out particles making it difficult
Lowest section on EM spectrum.
Radio waves
Radio wave uses.
Communication e.g radio, TV, broadcasting
Microwaves uses
Heating up things, TV, mobile phones
Infrared (IR) energy uses
Thermal imaging, heating things up
Light uses.
Seeing
Ultraviolet (UV) energy uses
Sterilisation, solar panels, tanning/solariums
X-Ray uses
Bone imaging, airport security
Gamma ray uses
Sterilisation, killing cancer cells, diagnosis of internal diseases
In order all the EM spectrum
Radio Microwaves Infrared Light Ultraviolet X-ray Gamma
What is refraction?
Bending of light by it passing through glass from the air or when light changes to a medium of a different density
What is reflection?
When a light ray hits a surface it cannot pass through and bounces off that surface at an angle (known as the angle of reflection).
What is absorption?
When light rays, a colour, or colours are absorbed by a substance when it hits the substance.
