Solutions Flashcards
This is formed when a solute dissolves into a solvent
Solution
A dissolvable substance that is placed in a solvent.
Solute.
A substance that can dissolve another.
Solvent.
What is it called when the solute won’t dissolve into the solvent?
Suspension.
When there is more of the solute in the solvent in a solution.
Concentrated solution.
A solution with a larger amount of solvent than the solute.
Dilute solution.
When there is too much of the solute to dissolve into the solvent.
Saturated solution.
This mixture is between a solution and a suspension. The particles in them are bigger than those in a solution, but smaller than those in a suspension, and do not settle out as quickly.
Colloid.
This contains two or more substances not chemically combined. They can be easily separated.
Mixture.
What is a desalination plant?
A desalination plant filters out salt from the ocean water to create fresh water.
This is a method of separation where one substance is too heavy and settles at the bottom of the mixture overtime, allowing the lighter particles to rise at the top for easy extraction.
Sedimentation.
A method of separation that removes the liquid from a mixture by heating and collecting the liquid.
Distillation.
What is the term for the leftover particles in the filter paper/sieve?
Residue.
What is the term for substances that have been filtered out and is left on its own?
Filtrate.
What is the term for the salt left behind in the evaporating basin?
Crystals.
