Ecology (2019) Flashcards
What does BIOTIC mean?
Living organisms.
What does ABIOTIC mean?
The not living part of an environment.
What does PRODUCER mean?
Organisms that make their own energy through chemical processes.
What is the first part of a food web?
Producers.
Example of a PRODUCER.
Plants, flowers, etc.
What is a CONSUMER?
Organisms that gain energy from consuming other organisms.
Example of a CONSUMER.
Animals, humans, etc.
Another (fancier) name for a PRODUCER.
Autotroph.
What is the name for animals that use their own energy to create body heat?
ENDOTHERMS.
What is the name for animals that rely on external sources (e.g sun) for heat?
ECTOTHERMS.
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be destroyed, only converted from one form to another.
What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?
Mass cannot be created or destroyed, only converted.
Name some of the chemical processes that producers can get their energy from.
Photosynthesis
Chemosynthesis
How much of the air is nitrogen?
78%
How much of the air is oxygen?
21%
How much of the air is argon?
0.9%
Chemical formula for AMMONIA:
NH3 (small 3)
What is the LITHOSPHERE?
The solid part of the Earth.
e.g rocks of the earth’s crust, soil, etc
What is the HYDROSPHERE?
Liquid (water) part of the Earth.
e.g oceans, seas, lakes, streams, rivers, etc.
What is the ATMOSPHERE?
The gaseous part of the Earth.
e.g Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Carbon Dioxide, trace…
What is the BIOSPHERE?
The living part of the Earth.
e.g fungi, bacteria, algae, animals + plants
How much of the air is CARBON DIOXIDE?
0.04%
(IN THE CARBON CYCLE)
What is the Carbon that humans dig up?
Coal deposits (~30% - 98% C), crude oil (hydrocarbon, CnHm)
(IN THE NITROGEN CYCLE)
Why is nitrogen important?
Nitrogen is important because it makes PROTEINS.
