Waves Flashcards
what is a transverse wave
Particles that oscillate at a right angle to the direction the wave is traveling.
What is a Longitudinal wave
Particles that oscillate parallel to the direction the wave is traveling.
Wavelength
Is the distance between two peaks or two troughs
Amplitude
The maximum displacement of a point of a wave from its rest position.
Frequency
Is the number of waves passing a point each second.
Peak
Is the highest point on a wave
Trough
Is the lowest point on a wave
Equilibrium
The position of a particle in the medium when there is no wave.
Wave speed
A wave that travels one wavelength during its periodic time.
Wave speed equation
The equation then links to the equation wavelength times frequency. v= f x λ
Example for Transverse waves
Water ripples, electromagnetic (radio and light)
Example of Longitudinal waves
Sound waves, ultrasound waves
Compression
A place where the particles are close together.
Rarefraction
A place where the particles are furthest apart.
Period
The time it takes for two successive crests (one wavelength) pass a specific point.
P = 1/f
