Microscopes Flashcards

1
Q

Cell theory

A

It is the concept that cells are the fundamental unit of structure, function and organisation in living organisms.
It states that both plant and animal cell tissue are composed of cells and that they are a basic unit of life

Q

Microscopy

A

it is an instrument that is used to magnify objects that are to small to see with the naked eye. It also allows us to observe how cells structures relates to their functions.

Q

Light Microscopes

A

Use light rays to make the object visible and magnifying lenses to observe small objects. The maximum magnification is x 1500 and the maximum resolution is 200 nm

Q

Disadvantages of LM

A

They have a lower resolution and magnification than another, more advanced, microscopes. They can only see large objects.

Q

Advantages of LM

A

They do allow us to observe sub-cellular structures, known as organelles. They are portable and don’t need any training.

Q

Electron Microscopes

A

They use a beam of high speed electrons instead of light to produce an image of the object. The maximum magnification of up to x 500 000 and higher resolution as great as 0.1 nm

Q

Advantages of EM

A

They have a greater magnification and resolution. They allow much more detail of cell ultrastructure to be observed.

Q

Magnification

A

Eyepiece lens magnification multiplied by objective lens magnification.
Magnification = imagine size / actual size
