Cells Flashcards
Prokaryotic cell
Are single cells-celled organisms. They are simple structures and do not have a nucleus or any membrane bound organelles.
Eukaryotic cell
These make up multi cellular organisms such as plants and animals. They are complex cells with a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. 10 to 100 micrometers.
Nucleolus
It makes RNA and ribosomes.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Protein synthesis takes place in the ribosomes and the newly synthesised proteins are transported to the Golgi apparatus.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Responsible for synthesis and transport of lipids and carbohydrates.
Golgi Apparatus
Newly made proteins are received here from the rough ER. The Golgi apparatus modifies them and then packages the proteins into vesicles to be transported to where they are needed.
Tonoplast
Selectively permeable to allow small molecules to pass through the vacuole.
Amyloplast
Responsible for the synthesis and storage of starch granules.
Nucleoid
It is the region where genetic information can be found and controls cellular activity.
Plasmid
They carry genes that may benefit the survival of the organism.
lysosomes
They break down waste materials including old materials.
Vesicles
they are used to transport materials inside the cell and secretory vesicles transport proteins that are to be released from the cell to the surface of the membrane.
Pits
Allow water to enter and leave the xylem vessels
Plasmodesmata
Enable to transport and communication between individual plant cells
