aim
find out if a faer respone can be condiyioned ito a 9 year olf
to see if fear response will be generlaized to other animals or objects
how long the conditioing lasts
procedure
repated mesaures: studies albert before and after conditioning
presnsted with hwite rat then other white fluffy animals and objects
albert: albert an only child, in hospotal from birth mom was a nurse, helathy best devloped in hospital, emotional stability main reason he was used
before: at 9 months assesed on responses using rabbit, cotton wool dog and a monkey masks with and without hair , burning newspapee and white rat .
did not show fear, wanted to play with rat so rat was a neautral stimuli as did not produce fear response.
conditioning
tested at 8 months whether a loud bang would cause a fear reactiom
sound made by striking hammer on 4ft long steel bar and 3/4 diamter
one of 2 exerimemters caused albert to turn its head , the otehr stationed behind the child, struck bar
albert started voilently breathing and arms raised
on second stumation lips puckered and trembled
third stimualtion broke into crying fit emotional sitatution was produced im lab
during:
at 11 months 3 days, presnted with a white rat, when he reached oit for it, expermenter struct the 4ft bsr
sound of bar was ucs,
repated 5 times one week later and twice more after 17 days
11months and one week after parimg albert provided with the rat,
withou noise, given wooden bocks to play with to see if its the rat or general upset
two weeks later they funf that the fesr was reducinh so re did the conditioning
he woud cry or crwal away ater seeing rat
11 months and 15 days: was given objects to test generlixations , given rabbit dig cotton wool and santa claus mask, reaction to dog notas violent as rabbit,
attempted to move to dog but no cry dog ,oved to head started crying, p,ayed with blocks normlly
11 mo ths 20 days; testted in a new rrom still same recton
results
rat and bang pairing; by 7th trail was crying as soon as rat was presnted showing more fearful distress jumping violety face in matress
rat alone;whimpered and lened away cried and carwled from rat
generlaization; strongest reaction was the rabbit
conclusion
classic study possible to induce emotiona fear thru cc not much of chanve to decondition however fortunateyt conditioned responses tend to decrease over time this is called exxtinction
