watson and rayner Flashcards
what is watson and rayners study a test of
phobia accusition
what was the aim of little albert
to demonstrate that classical conditioning can be used to create irrational fears in humans
what was the sample of their study?
opportunity sample
what was the procedure?
LA was assessed and was deemed emotionally stable
had no fear of a white rat
a steel bar was banged over his head with a hammer and he showed a fear response: puckering his lips
what was the next step in the procedure
la assessed at 11 months old where LA was given a white rat on his lap and watson made a large bang over his head by banging two metal steel bars over LA head procedure carried out 5 times the next week.
give a generaliabiltiy weakness of wtson and rasyn
population validity
this study lacks population validity as it only used one participant: little albert. little albert was a young 9momth olf boy from jhon hopkins university
t/f the study is amdrocentric and ethnocentric and the findings of classical conditioning and fear accuiition cannot be generalised to the wider population
give a validity strength of Watson and raynor
standerdised procedure
one strength of watson and raynors research was that it had a standeridsed procedure. all of the results and experiment on little al;bert where recorded. watson and raynor used the same ucs every time- the baning of the steel bar.
t/f the findings on classical conditioning and phobia accusition can be easily replicated and cause and effect can be established increasing the validity of the study
give an application positive
positive applications to society as leaning about the influence of classical conditioning of fear accuisition can help devise efective treatment schemes such as systematic desensatisation and flooding
t/f this has practical appliactions to nsocietyv as it can improve treatments for phobias and improve peoples quality of life
give an ethical weakness
portection from harm
during the experiment watson and raynor may have caused pssychiological harm to LA as the paring of the load bang of the bar and the white rat may have given im a life long fear of rats of wite fury objects. also the baning of the metal steel bar cuased distress to LA and cuased him to have a fear response of crying.
t/f this study caused psychological and potental longterm damage to LA breaking the ethical guidelines of protection from harm
