pavlov Flashcards
what is pavlovs aims
to see if associating a reflex with a neutral stimulus causes learning to take place and leads to a conditioned response
how many dogs did pavlov use
35 and 9 breeds
what was pavlovs conditions
dogs where put in sensory deprived room -eliminating sites and smells
dogs were putin harnesses and tubes surgecly implanted into salivary glands
what was pavlovs experimental conidtion
praperaed food was paired with
buzzer metranone and tuning fork
slaiva messuered
presented ns without food
what was pavlovs controlled condtion
put food in dogs mouth and measured saliva- baseline
what where pavlovs findings
salivated 1-2 seconds -baseline
salivated 5-6 seconds control
salivated 45 seconds experimental
what was pavlovs conclucsion
pavlov concluded that dogs can learn by association pair a ns and a ucs to generate a cr behaviour
give a reliability strength of Pavlov
standeridesd procedure
all of the 35 dogs where put in the same harness in the same labatory and giving them all the same foods
t/f the findings of a dogs cr and the pairing of a ns and a ucs are easily repliacted and is reliable
give a generaliability weakness of pavlovs study
anthropomorphic
one weakness is that the study is anthropermorphic as the study uses dogs to test the pairing of a ns with an ucs. there are many large differances between humans and dogs e.g does have more chromosomes than humans and are more instinctual.
t/f this decreases the generaliability of the findings as the finding s on the role of pairing a ns to a ucs are not representative of human behaviour
give a ethical weaknes of pavlovs study
care over caging
the dogs where in a harness for long periods of time in a sensory deprived room with no light or food
t/f this is highly unethical as there was no care over caging
give a validity weakness of pavlovs study
ecological validity
the dogs where straped in a harness in s esensory deprived room and given food in a highly controlled lab
t/f the salivation produced is not representative of every day learning mechanisms reducing the validity of the study as it cannot be generalised to the wider population
