capafons Flashcards
what was capafons aim
to investiagte the effectveness of systematic desnsatisation on fear of flying
how many participannts did he have
41 - 17 male 24 female
what desighn did he uses
matched pairs desighn
what was the matched pairs desighn based on
age , sex
how many pp in the experimental group
20
what was his sample method
he used an advertisment so a volenteer sample
before the test what was the procedure
self repport mesures closed scales and closed questions
watched a preparing for a flight video and stress levels where recorded
what did the experimental group then partake in
therapy
where did the therapy take place
university of la lagunas department of personality
how many and how long where the sessions
2x 1 hour sessions per week
over 8x weeks
what did the therapy consist of
deep relaxation in vivo and in virtro
fear higherachy
then wheat happened
each patients took 2 flights
after the two flights what did the patients do
all pre tests conducted again
What wherewithal capafons conclusion
capafons found that those who had not received therapy for fear of flying showed higher fear than those participants who had received therapy through systematic desensitisation
What scale of self report was used
EMV
what where capafons findings
Capafons found
After the post test pp who had not received therapy had a EMV score of 25 where as the experimental group had a much lower score of 13
Therefore ther is a statistically significant difference in the measures of ‘fear of flying’ between those that received systematic desensitisation and those who did not
What is one generalisability point for capafons
Lacks population validity.
As all of the 41 pp responded to an advert and so it only takes into account certain types of people. The sample is also ethnocentric as all pp where from Spain
T/f this means that the findings of systematic desensitisation on fear of flying are not generalisable to the wider population.
Give a validity strength
standardised procedure
Both the experimental and the control group were given the same pre and post flight EMV scales to fill out as well as interviews on their feelings and fears of flying. All 20 pp in the experimental condition did the same therapy twice a week for 8 weeks imagining situation in Vigo and in vitro.
T/f this was a standardised procedure and can easily be replicated to establish consistent findings
Give a applications strength
positive application
Flight companies such as virgin air can offer courses for passengers to over come their fear of flying
T/f this has positive applications to society as it allows companies to make more profit as the courses allow more people to fly. It also improves the quality of life for the people treated.
Give a weakness of capafons study
Ethics- protection from harm
Protection from harm could be seen as violated as the pp where put in to systematic desnsation which meant facing their fears in Vivo and invitro
T/f this could cause psychological strain and discomfort on the participant and break the ethical guideline of protection from harm
