Water Transport Flashcards
What is the xylem made from?
Cambium Tissue
What is the purpose of hollow tubes in the Xylem?
Act like pipes to allow water and dissolved minerals to pass through.
Why does the Xylem have a thick lignified wall?
Function is mechanical support and water conduction. Strengthen and Support. Give cells their rigidity.
Why does the Phloem have sieve plates?
To assist the movement through their perforated surface helping to transport nutrients to the stems and leaves.
Where are the sieve plates in the Phloem found?
Between each phloem cell at the top and bottom.
What is the purpose of the companion cell in the Phloem?
Provides energy in order to transport substances in the phloem.
What is the function of the plasmodesmata in the Phloem?
Connects the phloem to the companion cell.
What are the mechanisms of water transport?
Capillary.
Root pressure.
Cohesion tension theory.
How does capillary action work?
Intermolecular forces and attraction between water molecules and sides of the vessels.
What is the cohesion tension theory of water?
The theory suggests that water is obtained in plants from soil due to the fact water is cohesive so is able to be drawn up from soil particles into the root hairs via osmosis.
