Water on Earth Flashcards
Water Cycle
The cycle of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
Evaporation
Water vapor disappearing into the atmosphere
Condensation
Water vapor turning into clouds
Precipitation
Water vapor turning into liquid and falling to the ground
Runoff
Runoff is when water seeps out of a river into another body of water
Accumulation
Where water collects at the lowest point
Sublimation
Sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas phase without passing through the intermediate liquid phase.
Frost
Frozen groundwater
Transpiration
Transpiration is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere
Fog
A cloud at ground level
Cumulonimbus
Also know as Thunderheads and vertical clouds and they cause bad weather
Cirrus
Cirrus clouds are thin and wispy and they represent fair weather
Stratus
They have horizontal layers and are low in the sky
Cumulus
They are big and puffy and bring nice weather
Rain
Liquid water in the form of droplets that have condensed from atmospheric water vapor and then precipitated
