Heredity and Genetics Flashcards
Learned Behaviors
Learned behaviors are not passed down from our parents
Heredity
The passing of traits
When parents hands down an order of traits, it is called heredity
Inherited Traits
Inherited traits are passed down from our parents
Genes
Genes are a tiny part of a cell that holds DNA
Genes tell all living things what they can be
Traits
A distinguishing characteristic or quality
People inherit these from parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents
Instincts
The innate capacity of any living thing to respond to a given stimulus in a relatively fixed way
Dominant
The one of a pair of alleles that masks the effect of the other when both are present in the same cell or organism
Genotype
The genetic constitution of an individual organism.
Recessive
That one of a pair of alleles whose effect is masked by the activity of the second when both are present in the same cell or organism
Phenotype
The appearance of an organism resulting from the interaction of the genotype and the environment.
Genetics
The study of how living things pass their traits to the next generation
