Economic water scarcity
Occurs when water resources are available but there is an insufficient capital to access the water to meet demand
Physical water scarcity
Occurs when there is a physical lack of available freshwater resources to meet demand due to over-abstraction by agriculture, industry and domestic activity
Water stress
When the demand for water exceeds the available amount during a certain period (>1700m3 of water per person per year)
Water scarcity
There are limited renewable water sources (between 500 and 1000 cubic metres per capita per year)
Water vulnerable
When the availability of water is at risk (>2500cm3 per person per year)
Water secure/ security
The capacity of a population to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable water quality
