Displacement of seafloor- submarine earthquake
Seafloor uplifts displacing a water column
Waves radiate from source in all directions
Wavelength is long but height is low
Waves slow down due to friction of shallow seabed
Causes wave shoaling
Wave length decreases, height increases
Where do tsunami occur?
Along plate boundaries
What are they caused by?
Submarine earthquakes
Volcanic eruptions
Submarine landslides
Asteroids
What does DART stand for?
Deep Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis
What does DART do?
Reports info back to Tsunami Warning Centre
What can they do with the info they receive?
Can produce a new and more refined estimate of tsunami source
