Water cycle Flashcards
What is evaporation?
link to the water cycle
Liquid into water vapour
Energy from the sun makes water evaporate from land and sea turning it into water vapour
Water also evaporates from plants (transpiration)
What is condenstation?
Gas into LIquid
The warm water vapour is carried upwards (as warm air rises)
When it gets high up it cools and condenses to form clouds
Precipitation
As water droplets get too heavy they fall as precipitation (usually as rain, snow or hail) onto land where it provides fresh water for plants and animals
How does the water return to the sea
It then drains into the sea by river flows into lakes and eventually the water retutns to the ocean
And then the cycle repeats
What is sedimentation
It traps large particles which clump togather and sink to the bottom
What is filltration?
Traps small particles through sand and gravel
What is chloination?
Chlorine is added to kill bacteria and microorganisms
How would you seperate pure water from salt water?
You would boil the water so the salt stays at the bottom and the water evaporates then the vapour condenses into another pan
Advantage of producing drinking water by desilination?
Provides potable water in areas where theres not enough water avalible from surface or underground
Disadvantage of producing drinking water by desilination?
Needs alot of water which can be expensive and needs a plentiful supply of salty warer
What is desalination?
The pocess that produces potable water from salty water
