Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis
A type of cell division. It makes identical cells
Interphrase
Where the cell is growing, replicating its DNA and carrying out cell functions
Where is our DNA?
Our DNA is in the nucleus
What are chromosomes made up?
Coilled up lengths of DNA and proteins
How many chromosomes does a human have?
46
What happens during prophase ?
The nucleus starts to break down and spindle fibres appear
What happens during metaphase ?
The chromosomes are lined up on the spindle fibre across the middle of the cell.
What happens during anaphase ?
The chromosome copies are separated and moved opposite sides on the spindle
What happens during telophase ?
A membrane forms around each set of chromosomes to form nuclei of the two new cells
What is cytokinesis
cytokinesis is responsible for splitting the cytoplasm
Why do multicellular organisms need a continuous supply of cells
Growth
Development
Repair
Why do most organisms have an even number of chromosomes?
Inherited one from each parent. Each parent chromosome is in pairs.
Describe the function of DNA
The function of DNA is it codes for amino acids and contains genes
