Water Cycle Flashcards
What is stemflow?
Precipitation that reaches the ground by flowing down stems, stalks and tree-trunks
What is throughfall?
Precipitation that reaches the ground by dripping from the vegetation on leaves.
What is infiltration?
The passage of water vertically into the soil from the surface.
What is groundwater flow?
Water below the water table moves laterally at a very slow rate towards a river.
What is throughflow?
Water above the water table flows laterally through the soil to the channel.
What is surface run off?
Water flowing on the surface to the river.
What is channel flow?
Precipitation directly entering the river channel.
What is soil storage?
Water stored in the soil above the water cable.
What is the water table?
The boundary between unsaturated soils/rocks and saturated soll/rocks.
What is groundwater?
Water stored below the water table in saturated soil or rock.
What is water discharge?
The volume of water flowing in a river at a specific place for a specific time.
What is river flow?
Water flowing in a river or stream.
What is interception?
Raindrops fall on vegetation or man-made cover, preventing it from immediately reaching the soil and river.
What is percolation?
A vertical movement of water from above the water table to below the water table.
What is transpiration?
Biological process where water is lost as vapour through minute pores (stomata) in plants.
