Sand Dunes Flashcards
What is a succession on sand called?
Psammosere
What is succession, which is not interrupted by man, called?
Climatic climax vegetation
What is the climatic climax vegetation in the British Isles?
Oak + Beech trees
What plant colonises embryo dunes?
Pioneer plants
How do Pioneer plants change the environment?
They grow upwards which interrupts saltation. This traps the sand and stabilises the surface
Due to their horizontal roots with rhizomes, they spread across the dune quickly. These attach and further stabilise the surface.
Adding humus to the soil which increases water retention + lowers pH. This helps other less resilient plants to grow
What other pioneer plants are adapted to survive?
Sea couch
Marram
What is a sea couch?
Has succulent leaves to store water
What is marram?
Long roots that are able to extend down to the water table
What happens to the sand on foredunes?
Further sand accumulation means that these are now at a height beyond the reach of the highest storm tides
How much of the foredune is colonised and how much is exposed?
20% is exposed. 80% is cover in vegetation
How does soil change as humus is added?
•The soil begins to darken
•The pH is lowered – slightly alkaline
•Most of the moisture is fresh water but it is still limited.
How is humus formed?
As a result of plants dying and decaying
What is the dune height in the embryo stage?
1 metre
What is the dune height in the foredune stage?
5 metres
What is the dune height in the gray dune stage?
8-10 metres
