Carbon Cycle Flashcards
What is the Pedosphere
The outermost layer of the Earth that is composed of soil
What is photosynthesis
Process whereby plants turn light energy from the Sun to produce carbohydrates in the form of glucose
What is respiration
Chemical process that happens in all cells where glucose is converted into energy
What is decomposition
The process by which organic substances are broken down into simpler matter
What is combustion
Process where organic materials converts into energy by burning
What is the weathering
The chemical physical and biological breakdown of rocks
What are wildfires
Biomass combustion
What are geological sequestration
Carbon dioxide is captured from industrial processes and injected of the liquid form into the underground stores
Terrestrial sequestration
Use of plants to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it as carbon in the stems and roots of plants as well as the soil
Oceans sequestration
Carbon dioxide dissolves in water at the surface by diffusion
Volcanic activity
Returns carbon to the atmosphere that has been trapped for millions of years in rocks deep within the earths crust. carbon is in the lava
What are hydrocarbons
Inorganic compounds usually found in sedimentary rocks
What is calcium carbonate
A solid compound found in calcareous rocks ocean does And in skeletons of ocean creatures
