Functions of water
Water is vital for:
1. Hydration – Maintains fluid balance in the body.
2. Transporting nutrients – Helps carry oxygen and nutrients to cells.
3. Removing waste – Helps eliminate toxins through urine, sweat, and faeces.
4. Regulating body temperature – Prevents overheating by sweating.
5. Aiding digestion – Helps dissolve food and absorb nutrients.
6. Lubricating joints and eyes – Reduces friction and prevents dryness.
Deficiency of water
A lack of water can cause:
• Headaches, dizziness, and confusion.
• Tiredness and reduced concentration.
• Constipation due to lack of fluid in the digestive system.
• Dark, concentrated urine and reduced urination.
• Overheating due to lack of sweat regulation.
• Severe dehydration can lead to kidney damage and heatstroke.
Recommended daily water intake
• Adults should drink 1.5–2 litres (6–8 glasses) of water per day.
• More water is needed in hot weather or during physical activity.
• Additional water is obtained from foods with high water content.
Sources of water
Water comes from:
1. Drinks:
• Water, milk, herbal teas, fruit juices (in moderation), and low-sugar soft drinks.
2. Foods with High Water Content:
• Fruits – Watermelon, oranges, strawberries, cucumber.
• Vegetables – Lettuce, celery, tomatoes, courgettes.
• Soups and broths – Contain a high amount of water.
