Water Flashcards
How is hydrogen bonding formed in H2O
delta - of oxygen molecule is attracted to the delta + on hydrogen forming a hydrogen bond
What is cohesion
when hydrogen bonds form between water molecules, allowing surface tension to be created and so light enough insects can live on water, new habitat
What is adhesion
when hydrogen bonds form between water and other types of molecules (so when water joins with other molecules )
what do cohesion and adhesion allow
allows water to move up plants
what are the different properties of water
- is a universal solvent
- acts as metabolite
- has high specific heat capacity
- has high latent heat capacity
- high surface tension
- density and freezing
- transparency
how does water act as universal solvent
because water is a polar molecule it will attract other polar molecules and allow them to dissolve
what is the biological importance of water as an universal solvent
major component of cytoplasm because it allows chemicals to dissolve so chemical reactions can occur
how does water act as a metabolite
water is produced and used in many chemical reactions within cells
what is the biological importance of water acting as a metabolite
water is used and produced in
hydrolysis
condensation reactions
photosynthesis
how is the importance of water having a high specific heat capacity
water requires a high amount of energy to raise the temperature as most of energy goes towards breaking the hydrogen bonds
what is the biological importance of water having high specific heat capacity
as water heats slowly it creates a stable aquatic environment as habitats in water can resist temperature fluctuations and so enzymes in organisms can work at optimum temps
what is high surface tension
when water molecules meet air, they form hydrogen bonds with nearby water molecules (cohesion), producing an uneven distribution of force called surface tension
what is the biological importance of water having high surface tension
insects like pond-skaters walk on water because they are light enough not to break the H bonds between water molecules
how is ice less dense than liquid water
ice is less dense than water in its liquid state , because when water freezes it forms Hydrogen bonds with 3 others creating a structure which holds molecules further apart than in a liquid, and increased distance between water molecules lowers density
what is the biological importance of ice denser than liquid water
Habitats for animals
Insulates the water below and stops is freezing
