Walton-on-the-Naze Flashcards
What is the area?
Popular seaside resort on Essex coast
What is the Naze?
Peninsula of land stretching 3km north of town
Used for wildlife watching + walking
What are the cliffs in the Naze like?
20m high
Rich in fossils
SSSI
2 reasons for rapid erosion on the coast
Cliff rocks = weak (clays overlain by sand and gravels) = prone to slumping
High energy waves from n.sea pound this coast esp during winter storms
What protection?
Protection zone stretches 4km north 1/2 across Naze
Cliffs regarded to make shallower + less vulnerable to collapse
Major sea way built at foot of cliff
Wooden groynes along coast to interrupt N drift of sediment an build up beach
Cliff planted with vegetation to anchor soil + decrease slumping
Was it effective?
Defences have protected resort from erosion + flooding but now old and need maintenance
Sea wall = undermined by sea = scouring
Any additional defences?
130m sea wall now protected by 3m wedge of Elastocoast = prevent more erosion
Granite rock revetment built to help but erosion continued and cliff collapsed in 2000
2010: spent £1.2 million on more defences to protect the Naze
