Aim
To determine the relation between the extent of restrictions on smoking at home, in schooling in public places and smoking uptake and prevalence amongst school students

Procedure
Questionnaire asked if the adults in the home were smokers. P’s sorted into 6 categories:
- non susceptible non smokers
- susceptible non smokers
- early experimenters
- advanced experimenters
- established smokers
- current smoking
closed questions found out how smoking was restricted at home. school smoking bans and public places info added.
Results
Not developing a smoking habit was significantly linked to parent-enforced restrictions, legal restrictions, and school enforced bans.
home smoking bans most effective
school smoking bans were associated with 11% reduction in uptake of smoking.
Conclusions
home bans are the most effective way to prevent smoking uptake in teens
