Procedure

A

Questionnaire asked if the adults in the home were smokers. P’s sorted into 6 categories:

  1. non susceptible non smokers
  2. susceptible non smokers
  3. early experimenters
  4. advanced experimenters
  5. established smokers
  6. current smoking

closed questions found out how smoking was restricted at home. school smoking bans and public places info added.

A

Not developing a smoking habit was significantly linked to parent-enforced restrictions, legal restrictions, and school enforced bans.

school smoking bans were associated with 11% reduction in uptake of smoking.
