To review research on adherence in hypertensive patients
Method
review article of research identifying problems with taking medication with significant side effects for hypertension (high blood pressure) The study sues a qualitative approach.
Procedure
Statistical analysis of physical and psychological effects of medical adherence to medication for hypertension, including work, physical well-being, hobbies, personal life etc.
Results
Anti-hypertension medication can have the effect of sleepiness, dizziness and lack of sexual functioning in men. they can also effect cognitive functioning.
In one study (Curb et al) 8% patients dropped out due to sexual problems
15% dropped out due to problems arising from side effects
Conclusions
When the costs of taking the medication, such as side effects, outweigh the benefits of treating a mainly asymptomatic problem such as hypertension, there is less likelihood of the patient adhering to the treatment.
