Bandura - Self-Efficacy (theories of healthy living) Flashcards
what is self-efficacy?
Concept developed by bandora from the concept of an internal LOC.
says that we worker harder if we think we can succeed and working harder means we are more likely to succeed
4 influences which can affect self-efficacy:
- Enactive influences - individuals past experiences
- Vicarious influences -comparing oneself with others
- Persuasory influences - positive feedback from peers
- Emotive influences - Anxiety may end to feelings of incapability
Aim
To assess the self-efficacy of patients engaging in systematic desensitisation for snake phobias
Method
Quasi experiment
Participants
10 snake phobic patients - advertisement response (9m,1f)
Procedure
fear level and their perception of how they would cope were measured.
they were given relaxation exercises
Desensitisation; contrôle conditions, p’s looked at photo of snake until fear arousal fell, then put in the same room as a snake. eventually participants could handle them.
Finally their fear and coping perception was measured again.
Results
The 2nd fear scores were lower and coping perception was higher.
Conclusions
Desensitisation works- supports the concept of self efficacy as the activities led to change in perception.
shows this is a cognitive and behavioural concept
