- In the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the four
health systems of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. - The NHS was established in England and Wales on 5 July 1948
-National Health Service Act 1946 - In 1969, legislation was passed that separated the Welsh NHS from the English
NHS and put it under the control of a separate UK government department, the
Welsh Office. - Devolved since 1 July 1999
