Q

General approaches to anticoagulant therapy:
What are the 2 steps in the coagulation cascade?

A

1.Dissolving of an existing clot: activation of
plasminogen with the thrombolytic agents, which degrades insoluble fibrin
2.Prevention of thrombus formation or extension: inhibition of factor activation higher in the cascade with heparin and other oral anticoagulants
