W9 Flashcards
where do emotions start in the brain?
PFC
what is memory extinction?
pavlov found that overtime if the animal was no longer being conditioned that the conditioned response would go away overtime it is not unlearning tho it is due to a new memory being learnt that replaces the original one and this is what is extinction - old memory can be retrieved
whats white matter?
it is the connection between brain areas - PFC and amygdala - if its bigger = bigger capacity to inhibit the amygdala
what is the PAG - periaqueductal grey - different parts of it?
dlPAG - active response eg fight/escape
vlPAG - freezing response - freeze not to be detected/prepare to fight
what are the 6 core emotions
anger
sadness
happiness
fear
disgust
suprise
are emotionbal facial expressions global?
- transferable measure of emotion
- they are global and not necessarily learnt
- can be some cross cultural confusion
what is the amygdalas rolein the recogition of emotional facial expressions?
- those with damaged amygdala struggle with recogition = sugg its involvement
- evidence is strongest with fear emotions
- damage to amygdala doesnt affect regonition of emotion based on voice tone = could only be involved in facial
producing emotions? role of amygdala
- damage amygdala = emotionally dull
- impaired facial expressions
- however SM could produce facial expressions and she had bilateral amygdala damage
production of emtional facial expressions - lateralisation
evidence left side of face is more expressive and therefore right side of brain important in producing facial expressions
