W8 Flashcards
emotions are responses charcterised by: (include eg fear)
- physiological changes - increased heartrate, BP, pupil size, hormone secretion
- behavioural responses - facial expressions, inmobility
- changes in cognition - increased attention and memory
- subjective feelings - feeling of fear
emotions are driven by biologically significant stimuli and serve functions:
- adaptive benefits eg to survive - find food/water, avoid dange
- can be maladaptive - phobias, PTSD, drug addiction
the implementation of fear is underpinned by learning
what was james-langes theory?
“he is afraid ‘because’ he runs away” - theory of fear reactions
what was cannon-bard theory?
perception of fear inducing stimulus does generate a peripheral response but there is also a direct generating of this subjective emotional state - they happen in parellel no cause and effect
whats the schachter-singer/twofactor/cognitive labelling theory?
agrees that periferal response triggers emotional state but suggests that the emotional state is not determined by that but rather by environmental interpretation
