W6 L1 Thu human population genetic 1 Flashcards
What is human genetic
-the study of inheritance as it occurs in human being
-lead to the idea of eugenic, mating of individual w/ desirable trait to produce offspring w/ desirable trait, big issue
-eugenics idea spread around the world
=population genetic try to move away from eugenic idea
Problem in human genetic today
-lack of diversity due to previous data taken from mainly Europeans population
-there are increase in global GWAS sources but still lacking compare to european
How many ancestor does one have
- 2 parent
- 4 grand parent
-8 great great parent - ancestor at a generation= 2^n, but there will be a common ancestor eventually as human are not infinite
Who does your genome come from
- 50% inherited from parent
- 25% from grand parent
-great contribute 12.5%
-great great contribute 6.25%
percentage = 1/2 ^n - a large proportion of our ancestor does not contribute to our genetic material
How to talk about population genetic
- we need a formal means of describing processes in order to synthetize this observation into coherent, cohesive knowledge
- the formal mean: relatedness, heterozygosity, diversity, migration, population structure, mating choice, mutations, adaptation, evolution, etc
Ways of thinking about a population
- full genealogy to trace back ancestor, remove those that did not contribute to next gen to find a common ancestor
-make a coalescent tree
what can coalescent let us do
-date relatedness and divergence between sequences
- coalescent modelling can be expanded to incorporate selection, expansion etc giving us a framework agaisnt which to test prediction and observation
